A team of students from Moi University have emerged champions in this year’s Enactus Kenya National Business and Entrepreneurship Competition. Moi University group, which will represent Kenya at the Enactus World Cup in Canada later this year, beat other teams from 26 public and private universities.
The team’s three projects were recognized for innovation and community impact. The first involves chicken brooding using the “Chepkube” environment-friendly stove brooder, the second aims at reducing child mortality rates using mobile phones to remind mothers of immunization dates, while the third seeks to address health caused by high levels of fluoride in water.
“We aim at recruiting over 5,000 students from all over Kenya to grow their leadership skills, current market demand information and innovative ideas that attract investment,” said James Shikwati, Enactus Kenya Country Leader.
The objectives of the 14th Enactus Kenya Expo included identifying a university with high impact community outreach projects and offer universities an opportunity to showcase their innovations as students get employeability skills training.
Enactus Africa Nazarene team was the first runners up with their “Taka Smart” social enterprise that offers reward points in exchange for recyclable waste. The Second runners up, Enactus University of Eldoret, presented project “Faida Mazao” that seeks to curb food loss and waste through solar powered cold storage facilities.
Enactus Kenya has hosted 14 National Business and Entrepreneurship Competitions since 2003 and participated in 14 international competitions that involve university undergraduate students. Enactus Kenya has 3,054 registered student members.
