The government of Kenya has been building roads at hugely exaggerated prices.
A report now shows that the Jubilee government built the Mombasa Dongo Kundu road at a cost of Sh. 2.7 billion Shilling.
This is the latest in a series of projects that consume money that doesn’t make sense.
The other of such projects is the Standard Gauge Railway project that is expected to consume over Sh. 1 trillion by the time it reaches Kisumu. This is despite its economic viability being consistently questioned.
Construction of the phase two and three of the Dongo Kundu bypas was set to start in October. The 9km second phase is now billed as the most expensive road construction exercise in Kenya’s history.
This section includes the Mwache-Mteza dual carriageway, with two overseas bridges of 600m, 1,440m and a 660m viaduct at a cost of Sh. 24 billion.
The project, also referred to as the Southern Bypass, aims at easing traffic snarl-ups at Likoni Ferry and decongesting the port and town.
It will also link up with the main corridors; the Nairobi-Mombasa, Mombasa-Malindi and Mombasa-Lunga Lunga highways.
