Details of over Sh. 300,000 monthly salary each police officer in Haiti is earning

Each Kenya Police officer in Haiti shall pocket a monthly salary of over Sh. 300,000. This salary includes their allowance for partaking in the Haiti mission and their normal monthly salary earned as policer officers under the Kenya Police Service.

According to a breakdown on the salaries that was exposed by the Daily Nation on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, each policer officer is to be paid $70 per day. This translates to a monthly pay of $2,100. These figures are equivalent to Sh. 9,100 per day and Sh. 273,000 based on an exchange average rate of 130 to the US dollar.

These police officers are expected to pocket over Sh. 300,000 when this money is topped up with their usual monthly salary. Their usual salary is higher than Sh. 50,000 as the current rate for a police constable is around Sh. 50,000 per month, and these are higher ranking and better trained officers.

The Haiti mission is being funded by the United States government. The payments follow complaints that had been highlighted by their families back in Kenya that they had not received any salaries despite being in Haiti for over two months.

400 Kenyan police officers were deployed in Haiti as the first tranche of an international force in June. They were followed by a second contingent of 200 officers in mid-July. The officers are working alongside their local counterparts who had been overwhelmed by local gangs.

Currently, it is estimated that the Haiti police force is made up of less than 10,000 officers, yet the country whose population is estimated at around 11 million people has over 200 gangs, of which 8,000 Haitians are members.
