Help! I earn well from my teaching job but it makes me depressed, should I quit?

A Kenyan lady has taken to social media to seek help after years of struggle with her career and multiple failed business attempts.

In a post on the Facebook group 52 Weeks Saving Challenge, the 39-year-old revealed she works as an ECDE teacher and earns Sh45,000 per month.

She, however, lamented the toxic working environment, which she claims has constantly thrown her into depression.

“I am a teacher ECDE. It’s so frustrating to do that job. You work for parents who are young and not literate. The school administration expects you to bow to all the parents’ demands,” she wrote.

”Am paid well 45k, but I feel like quitting. Im 39, meaning 21 years to go.I have been under depression for a while now,’’ she added.

The lady who is now contemplating quitting her job further expressed fears that she might quit and end up in financial struggles given her spouse is jobless and her kids and mother depend on her.

Help! I earn Sh. 88,000 net salary but debts leave me with Sh. 6,000 only

Appealing for help, she noted that she has savings amounting to Sh500,000 but fears investing the money in a business, given her previous failed attempts.

”I have tried business since 2016, but I keep failing miserably. I have an elderly and needy single mom. My children look up on me. I have saved 500k what can I  get into and be sure to make it and take care of my family my spouse does not have a stable income,’’

”This toxic environment will break me am so scared of going to business, but then this work is so exhausting am losing myself,’’ she added.

Various social media users responded to her concern with most of them advising her to appreciate her job and have a positive mindset towards it.

Kibet Enock said: I would say as follows, don’t allow mentality of quiting engulf you…. if it happens so, you begin seeing negativities and even develop negative energies. Embrace positivities and you’d see positive outcome.

As you plan to quit. Before you quit, ensure that you have a home where you dont pay rent. Ensure that you have paid one year’s school fees upfront.

As you go to business ensure that you take one that pays zero/less rent because utakuwa unafanyia landlord. Take care of people out there, some could be waiting to get their portion of your 500

Alice Runji said: It’s not easy to earn a 45k profit inn business. Since you have tried businesses before don’t give up. You can try a different Business from what you’ve done before but alongside your job.

Mental health is paramount too but you can thrive as you also make applications elsewhere. Make it quick for the sake of your mental and emotional health

Eunice Florence: Just put up with the parents because you know what you want, then always pray every day not to meet arrogant parents or stubborn kids. If you’re attitude is good you will attract good things. Start a business before quitting and see how it goes.

Shee Itotia: Go for professional counselling before you do anything. Work on your mental health before you make any decision please. You will need a clear mind while making business decisions, not one that is clouded.

So please before anything, see a professional counsellor or therapist. It won’t cost much but it will take you a loooong way… All the best mama….
