I'm going for my visitor visa interview at US Embassy; how do I prepare?

I have a scheduled visitor visa interview at the US Embassy in Nairobi next week. How do I prepare? Can anyone who has attended an interview at the US Embassy give me insights on how to prepare and what to expect?

This is the question that one Kenyan who has applied for the US B2/B2 visitor visa asked at a popular forum for tours and travel.

The question elicited mixed reactions and answers from Kenyans who have previously had an experience at the US Embassy. We sampled some of these experiences:

Answer the following questions comprehensively: Your purpose of visiting the US; What you do for a living, how much you earn; Marital status/children; Your travel history.

Ensure that your answers are consistent with what you put in your DS 160. Dress well, but don’t over do it. If you don’t wear heels on a normal day, don’t wear them on that day.

If you don’t do makeup, don’t start that day. Finally, polish up on your English, compose yourself, make eye contact, be clear with your answers. In two minutes or less, it will be over. – Kenia Esther.

Follow everything In DS-160. Make your answers short and precise but definitely not one word answer. Example; if they ask when are you traveling to US just say “I will be traveling to US on 15th Jan 2024 for conference and be back on 30th Jan 2024 to resume work.” – Mwihaki.

It’s the worst this year, I was there on the 19th. They did not even bother asking the pertinent queries. Interviews take less than two minutes over the counter. The concierge does not even bother asking for relevant support documents. All the best anyways. – Dylan.

Don’t show any signs of desperation. This will help you in building your confidence and clarity of both speech and mind. Keep in mind that they’re in the business of denying people visas, it’s up to you to convince them why you deserve it. It’s not the other way around. – Koome.

They asked me this very annoying question “Are you sure you will return if we granted you the visa”? I felt offended, so I asked back ” what’s there in America that would make me not return to my country”?

I guess they need to know that you are confident enough, informed enough, have enough ties, family, economic, social and love your country enough to want to return. After all what’s there in America? – Elizabeth.
