Nairobi Aviation students stone Nation offices in protest over ‘Certificates of Doom’ feature

The Star: Nairobi Aviation College students have stormed Nation Media Group offices over claims that the institution’s certificates are fake.

The Nairobi Aviation students hurled stones at the building in the CBD on Monday shouting Dennis Okari’s name.

They demanded an explanation from Okari, whose investigation was aired on NTV on Sunday.

The expose dubbed ‘Certificates of Doom’ alleged that the Nairobi Aviation College admits students without primary and secondary school certificates at a minimum fee of Sh3,000.

A lecturer alleged to be from Nairobi Aviation reportedly confirmed the claims, telling Okari that he has helped many obtain and “clean” their certificates.

“If you have Sh5,000 you will have a certificate at this school, as long as you know somebody from the management,” said the lecturer.

A class six drop-out is also said to have obtained an engineering certificate from Nairobi Aviation without taking any classes.

The High Court had temporarily stopped NTV from airing the expose, ordering Okari not to carry out investigations, on January 30. “A temporary injunction is hereby granted preventing the defendant from airing the expose and investigations advertised, known as ‘Certificates of Doom’, pending the hearing of this application on February 4,” the court said in a letter.

“This honourable court issues an order of a mandatory injunction compelling the defendant not to involve the plaintiff in any investigation touching on its core business.”
