The Nairobi County government has taken over the popular Rayan Hotel and Restaurant over non-payment of rate arrears. Rayan Hotel was among other six businesses that were targeted and shut down by the county government officials. According to the Nairobi County government, Rayan Hotel had refused to adhere to a notice from the county government to pay their outstanding arrears.
The Deputy Chief Revenue Officer Mr. Shaban Asman noted that 13 owners at the Portal Chambers building where Rayan Hotel is hosted owed the county government Sh. 28 billion! However, Rayan Hotel owes the county government Sh. 1 million in rate arrears. “In the matter of section 18 of the renting act and in the matter of attaining a friend by Nairobi city county, notice is hereby given to Rayan Hotel of owing the county government Sh999,521. The building is thereby put under Nairobi City County,” read the notice outside the hotel.
The county government officials said that Rayan Hotel will only be handed back to its owners once the outstanding debt is paid. Rayan Hotel is situated on Banda Street in Nairobi’s CBD.
The other businesses include one on Luthuli Avenue over a debt of Sh405,320, and another on Munyu road over Sh371,353. The county officials said the exercise will continue on Friday.
