Nairobi to host a street festival geared towards breaking art barriers
Nairobi, December 14, 2016: Nairobi will be hosting a street art festival dubbed PAWA Festival that will take place on December 18th, 2016 at Koinange Street from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Themed Unity Through Art, PAWA festival seeks to break down demographic and geographic art barriers while celebrating East Africa’s creative genius.
This year, the festival will showcase a wide array of art genres including music, graffiti, film, fine art, dance, fashion, poetry and photography with the hope of reaching out to a bigger audience.
Some of the performing groups expected at the festival include – spoken word artists Teardrops and Mufasa; Kenya Dance Academy; Gravitti, Zikki, among others.
Commenting on the festival, Nairobi County Deputy Governor, Jonathan Mueke noted: “This is a great milestone as we seek to develop the arts and music industry in the country. The festival platform will provide an opportunity for entrepreneurs to promote their businesses in our quest to support local entrepreneurs in the country. As we look forward to the festival, I call upon everyone to come out in large numbers and support the event. Together, let’s make it big.”
PAWA 254, General Manager, Njeri Mwangi noted: “PAWA Festival is an event that brings art out of the galleries and out into the streets for the public to interact with and experience in a space that they are familiar with. It is bringing art to where the public is and also bringing out the creativity of the public.  This year, with our theme “Unity through Art”, and we hope to bring peoples experiences and hopes and creativity together to infuse togetherness. Building up on last year’s success, we are expecting thousands of people to come through the showcase. “
The event will tap into the expressive and economic potential of the numerous talented young people in the country to create a platform that will establish regular exposure for arts & cultural professionals as well as promote tourism, culture, heritage and the arts.
The first ever PAWA Festival which was held last year attracted 2000 people.
