New Kenya police salaries after Ruto’s pay rise

New Kenya police salaries after Ruto’s pay rise

President William Ruto, on Monday, June 24, announced a new salary scale for police officers starting July 2024.

Speaking at the Administration Police Training Campus in Embakasi while flagging off the first group of 400 police officers to leave for Haiti, Ruto said the government would increase the salaries of police officers by up to 40 percent.

The Head of State explained that the government has set aside Sh25 billion to improve the working conditions of the security personnel to ensure they discharge their duties effectively.

“In an effort to secure the country from internal and external aggression, the government is implementing a police equipment modernisation programme at a cost of Sh25 billion,” he said.

The Kenya police earn varying salaries depending on educational level, years of experience, and rank.

The National Police Service Commission (NPSC) in August 2023 unveiled the third remuneration review cycle for the officers and civilians within the service, putting the monthly salary of a newly recruited constable at Sh21,645.

The salary scale for all officers based on their ranks and years in service received an increase of between Sh1,255 to Sh9,439.

Assuming a 40 percent uniform increase, a newly recruited constable who earns Sh21,645 will pocket a monthly salary of over Sh30,000.

A long-serving constable who currently receives Sh40,354 will now take home Sh56,495, while a new corporal officer will earn Sh39,000, up from the current Sh27,879.

On the other hand, a recently promoted sergeant officer who takes home Sh38,829 will now earn Sh54,360 whereas a long serving officer in the same rank who gets Sh55,049 will take home Sh77,068.

The Kenya Police salary increment will also apply to prison officers and National Youth Service (NYS) personnel, aiming to enhance service delivery within the security sector.
