I lost Sh. 55 in police beating, says NMG journalist Mwangi Muiruri

Nation Media Group journalist Mwangi Muiruri has claimed that he lost Sh. 55 and a mobile phone during a beating that he received from security detail attached to deputy president Rigathi Gachagua’s wife, Dorcas.

The journalist was beaten on Thursday morning in Gatanga, Murang’a County.

The incident was however not the first in which the journalist is finding himself. He has been beaten multiple times after staging various security breaches.

The last of this confrontation between Muiruri and police officers happened in December 2021 during a political event in Kangari, Kigumo that was attended by then deputy president (now president) William Ruto.

“In the process of I executing my duties of recording the event as it happened, some overzealous officers from her security detail (Dorcas Gachagua) grabbed my phone and in the process of retrieving it back, they assaulted me,” said Mwangi.

He said that he will pursue the matter through the courts to their conclusion.

“We are going to pursue it so that justice can be done and pass the statement that media is not there by default on the ground, it is there by right,” he said.

“When these incidents happen, they can be rest assured that they will be pursued to their logical conclusion because I lost a phone and Sh.55.”
