President Uhuru Kenyatta has awarded State House Spokesperson Kanze Dena and two of his family members the second highest award in Kenya.

The president rewarded Ms. Dena and his two relatives the Order of Burning Spear award.

Uhuru’s nephew and personal aide Jomo Gecaga was awarded the Moran of the Order of the Golden Heart (M.G.H) award.  Former State House Chief of Staff Nzioka Waita also received this award.

In Kenya, the Chief of the Order of the Burning Spear (C.B.S) is the second highest honour after the Moran of the Order of the Golden Heart.

Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) CEO Nana Gecaga is the other notable figure who received the E.B.S award. Nana is Uhuru’s niece.

The president also gave political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi the Elder of the Order of the Burning Spear (E.B.S).

The awards came as President Uhuru inches closer to leaving office after the August 9 General Elections.

In these awards, some 180 civilians were also awarded Head of State’s Commendation while 24 officers received the same honour under the military division. 156 individuals were also conferred with the Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya (O.G.W).

Supreme Court judge Isaac Lenaola, Court of Appeal President Daniel Musinga and Registrar of Political Parties Ann Nderitu were also awarded.

The State awards are in recognition of outstanding and distinguished service to the country. They were contained in a gazette notice dated July 8, 2022.

The State awards have however been subject to public ridicule and criticism due to some of the recipients who have made the list. These recipients include Githeri Man who made the list simply for eating Githeri in public.
