Kenyan student Orville Kimutai dies while swimming in Western Australia

23-year-old Kenyan boy Orville Kimutai relocated to Perth, Australia in March to pursue further studies. However, the young man’s life was cut short after he drowned while swimming on Stockton Lake near Collie town in Western Australia.

According to Australian News Outlet, 7News, the body of Orville Kimutai’s body went missing at around 3:15 pm (8:15 am Kenyan time). During his swim, offshore witnesses stated that the young man required assistance but none of them would help him.

The following day, police divers conducted a thorough swim at the lake in an attempt to recover the body which had already gone missing. They found it in the lake about 20 metres from the bank.

Kimutai’s father Horace Tures while speaking to a local news publication, revealed that they are waiting for the post-mortem to be finalised before they can repatriate the body of the young man.

“The body was handed to the coroner after which it will go through a post-mortem. We are told the report will take around two weeks for them to clear the body for repatriation,” the grieving father mentioned.

Kimutai’s body is expected to be in Kapteren, Elgeyo Marakwet for his burial slated on September 30th, subject to the coroner’s report. Kenyan community leaders based in Australia have termed the process expensive.

The mourning family has set up a GoFundMe campaign for individuals willing to help raise funds for the repatriation. They have also requested the public to pray for them in this challenging period.

Alfred Koech, a Kenyan community leader based in Western Australia, eulogised Orville Kimutai as a talented, down-to-earth guy who always had a smile on his face. He also revealed that Orville was fitting well within the Australian community.

“Death took such a humble guy from us. We mourn as the Kenyan community in Western Australia. We also mourn with the family,” the leader wrote as his caption on a Facebook post.
