Parking fees in Nairobi to hit Sh. 650 in new hourly rates

Parking fees in Nairobi

Nairobi County has proposed to introduce hourly parking fees in Nairobi that could see charges paid for parking rise to Sh. 650.

According to Nairobi County Chief Officer for mobility Boniface Nyamu, motorists will pay Sh. 100 for the first hour in the Nairobi Central Business District area and thereafter Sh. 50 for the remaining hours.

“We have seen that especially in Central Business District (CBD), the demand for parking is high than the supply. We have proposed in the next finance bill to increase the amount of money that one pays for parking,” Nyamu told the media.

“We will be billing hourly meaning that the more you stay in CBD, the more you pay. This will increase parking revenue and discourage congestion.”

This will be a shift from the current trend where motorists pay a flat rate of Sh. 200 for parking in the CBD area. This will not be the first attempt at revising parking fees in Nairobi. Over the past ten years successive county government leaders in Nairobi have made attempts at revising parking fees in vain.

The latest was former Governor Mike Sonko’s decision to increase parking fees from Sh. 200 to Sh. 400. This attempt was thwarted by a court case that was filed by the the Consumer Federation of Kenya (Cofek).
