Kenyan referee Peter Waweru Kamaku, who is currently officiating games at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), will be earning a tidy sum as an official.

The 42-year-old senior lecturer and professor of Pure & Applied Mathematics at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology is set to earn more than Sh. 196,000 for each match he officiates.

In the 2024 edition of the tournament that commenced on January 13th, three Kenyan officials were selected. Alongside Peter Waweru, names include Gilbert Cheruiyot and Stephen Yiembe.

In addition to receiving a lump sum based on their performance at AFCON, the referees will also be compensated with Sh. 195,500 ($1200) for each match officiated.

This follows the directive of the Former Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Ahmad Ahmad who increased the amount paid to officials from $750 to $1200. These figures remained unrevised, despite CAF increasing the tournament’s prize money.

Peter Waweru is serving as a referee at AFCON for the third consecutive time, having made his debut in the 2019 edition in Egypt.
