Why Raila has withdrawn from presidential debate with Ruto

Azimio presidential flagbearer Raila Odinga will not take part in the highly anticipated presidential debate.

This has been announced by his communications lead Professor Makau Mutua.

Raila says that he will now hold his own session that will be broadcast on Tv.

We plan to take part in a televised town hall at Jericho Social Hall in Nairobi’s Eastlands with ordinary Kenyans to offer our solutions to the challenges facing the country and common people,” the Raila campaign spokesperson Mutua said.

In the statement, Raila and his team says that they have turned down the debate out of fear that issues such as corruption will be left out.

He accused the media of allowing deputy president William Ruto to dictate the subjects that will be discussed during the debate.

“He has demanded that the debate not focus on corruption, ethics and governance. These are issues at the core of the Azimio campaign; any debate devoid of these questions will be an insult to the intelligence of Kenyans,” the statement said.

“It would be a colossal mistake to reward such a person with a national debate. We will not assist his failing campaign; he can explain himself and his poor record to voters without our help.”
