Wealthy Kenyans who own private airstrips

Kenya is home to a number of high-net-worth individuals who control businesses in various sectors.

Latest wealth report by British-based investment migration consultancy Henley and Partners shows the country has ten centi-millionaires, ranking seventh in Africa and first in the East African region.

Centi-millionaires are individuals who have a net worth of at least USD 100 million, an equivalent of approximately Sh12.9 billion.

According to the report, these individuals’ wealth comes from various sources including inheritance, investing in stock markets, leading multi-national tech companies, and selling off their small to medium-sized enterprises.

Kenya’s super rich community is mainly dominated by politicians and elite business people who live lavishly with fleets of expensive cars and choppers.

Kenyatta Family

The family of former president Uhuru Kenyatta is arguably the richest in Kenya with businesses spanning various sectors including transport, insurance, hotels, farming, land ownership and the media industry.

The family owns a private airport at the heart of its Northlands City in Ruiru. The airport has a functional runway strip that can allow the landing of private planes and jets.

At the far end of the runway strip, there is an unmarked building believed to be a hangar.

William Ruto

President Ruto’s multi-million home in Moiben, Uasin Gishu County, reportedly hosts a private airstrip. It also emerged that the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) had invited bids to construct an airstrip next to Ruto’s 900 acre Intona home in Kilgoris.

Humphrey Kariuki

Despite his immense wealth, Humphrey Kariuki Ndegwa, the billionaire owner of The Hub Karen maintains a low profile.

Even in his rural village in Nyeri where he was born and brought up, a few people can match his face to the name. Only his age mates in Ndima village know him.

Anyone younger knows little or nothing about the business mogul who owns a private airstrip at Fairmont Hotel.
