Radio Maisha journalists to go off air over 7-months unpaid salaries

The Standard Media Group’s Radio Maisha journalists have threatened that they will go on strike and go off air on July 3 if their salaries are not paid. The Radio Maisha journalists will be joined off air by the rest of the Standard Media Group’s radio department.

The Standard Media Group’s radio department includes  Radio Maisha, Spice FM, Berur FM and Vybez Radio.

In a scathing letter, the journalists have lamented that they have not been paid salaries for the period between June to August 2023 and February to June 2024. This letter was addressed to the management of the Standard Media Group. The two highlighted unpaid periods suggest that the workers at the Standard Group’s radio department may have gone without salaries for a total period of up to seven months.

“The matter of unpaid regular salary and mounting arrears as you’re aware is one of urgency. As a department – we need to have this matter addressed,” the journalists from the radio team stated.

They demanded in the letter that the media house fully pays their salaries for the month of June by July 2 and ensure 100 per cent payment of monthly salaries going forward.

“With what is collected each month vis a vis what the salary burden is – let the amount be earmarked and kept aside to service salaries unfailingly,” the radio team stated. They added that the media house should pay 30 per cent of the arrears every month going forward until the salary debts are finished.

“Kindly note that in the event of non-payment as proposed above, all programming will be off air on July 3 on all four radio stations until our plight is addressed and a commitment from your end is issued in writing,” the Radio Maisha journalists stated.
