Ruto, Mbadi to reintroduce taxes, 49 amendments in rejected Finance Bill 2024

The Cabinet for the National Treasury John Mbadi has confirmed that the government is planning to reintroduce the rejected Finance Bill 2024. This comes days after President William Ruto said during public rallies in Western Kenya and in Uasin Gishu that he would reintroduce the rejected Finance Bill 2024.

According to CS Mbadi, the National Treasury will bring back levies such as the Eco Levy as well as 48 other amendments that were contained in the Finance Bill which saw huge protests across in the month of June.

“They brought about 53 suggested amendments. These 53 have now been reduced to about 49,” said Mbadi during an interview on Citizen TV.

“Eco levy has some meanings; we will just make sure that they are levied on those items which pollute the environment. Issues that are contentious like sanitary pads, those we will leave out.”

Mbadi had also hinted at the reintroduction of sections of the rejected Finance Bill 2024 when he officially took over from former National Treasury cabinet secretary Njuguna Ndung’u.

“Our team is already working on some of those proposals that were in the Finance Bill 2024, which we can now put together and take back to parliament, not as a Finance Bill, but as other proposals,” he had said during the handover ceremony at the National Treasury.

“We will do extensive public participation because we don’t want to be blamed again, to be accused of introducing things that are insensitive without considering the plight and concerns of Kenyans.”

Earlier on, while speaking at Namacha in Malava constituency, Kakamega county, said that fresh plans for the reintroduction were in the offing.

“There are some people who made a lot of noise until the budget was withdrawn, I have now told our MPs we are going to plan afresh,” said Ruto.
