Young men hanging on Benz at Mombasa road arrested, female driver escapes

Co-Op post

Two young Kenyans have been the subject of much talk online for their dangerous stunts while driving in a Mercedes Benz E-250 Model. The viral clip of the young men was shared online by Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen.

Previously, the Transport Cabinet Secretary had promised to enforce a crackdown on rogue drivers following a surge in accidents. After seeing the video sent by a concerned citizen, Kipchumba Murkomen pledged to take action against the two young men.

Mr. James Gathogo Njeri, the car owner, was publicly addressed in the post. Following the buzz on social media caused by the video of the youths dancing and waving their hands in the air, 23-year-old Peter Igadwa Agawy and 20-year-old Peleg Mosongo Momari were taken into police custody.

“James Gathogo Njeri, this is how your white Mercedes Benz KCX 959B class E-250 was being driven on Mombasa Road in one of those ‘where is the Minister’ moments. We are concerned, and a responsible citizen has alerted us. We shall do what we must,” he wrote in the post.

TV Journalist Seth Olale confirmed that the duo were arrested and detained at the Capitol Hill Police Station on the same day. Today, they were arraigned at the Traffic Court and charged with riding in a dangerous position, a violation of section 61(4) of the Traffic Act.

Their case was presented before Chief Magistrate Martha Nanzushi, and both pleaded guilty to the charges. Nanzushi ordered a pre-sentencing report to be prepared before handing down their sentences.

Allegedly, the other suspect, Loise Apata, who is believed to have been the driver of the Mercedes Benz, is still on the run. Police have launched a manhunt for her. Meanwhile, the other two suspects will remain detained at the Capitol Hill Police Station as they await sentencing.
