Benjamin Wafula from Chekata, Kakamega County, W. Wanyingi from Nairobi County and Evans Ochieng from Kitui County are the winners of the first, second and third weekly draws of Kshs. 1 Million in the ongoing Stawisha Na M-Shwari promotion.

Mr. Wafula, a father of one and a teacher at Bridge International Academies, was the first lucky winner in the promotion that was launched 2 weeks ago.

“I receive my salary through M-PESA and naturally find M-Shwari to be a convenient savings channel. This month, I deposited KSh. 500 in my M-Shwari Lock Savings account. I was at Cheka Town with my friends when I received a call from 0729333333 informing me that I had won,” said Mr. Wafula.

Mr. Ochieng, a revenue officer at Kenya Power becomes the youngest Stawisha Na M-Shwari millionaire at only 28.

“At such a young age, I’m quite excited to be a winner. M-Shwari has been a convenient savings platform that has been enabling me plan for my future. I plan to use the KSh. 1 million to pay back my HELB loan, fund for my masters and invest the balance in the M-Shwari Lock Savings account,” said Mr. Ochieng.

The promotion will see over 3,000 lucky customers win more than KSh. 50 million over 6 weeks and aims to instill and boost a savings culture among M-Shwari customers. The Kenya national savings rate is relatively low at about 12% – 15 % of GDP due to a significant percentage of the population being previously excluded from accessing financial services.

“The aim of this promotion is to encourage more customers to save on M-Shwari and be rewarded for their financial prudence. I encourage M-Shwari customers to continue saving on M-Shwari,” said Brian Wamatu, acting Financial Services Director for Safaricom.

This is the second M-Shwari promotion since its launch in 2012. The first promotion dubbed Fanikisha Maisha na M-Shwari held in 2014 saw Paul Alfayo a 21 year old sugarcane cutter from Kakamega win the grand prize of Kshs 5 Million.
