Several feared dead as terrorists bomb Kenyan town CBD

An unknown number of people have died following a suspected terrorist attack at Elwak Town in Mandera County.

The Monday, April 29, incident occurred opposite a local Administration Police camp where the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was reportedly planted.

Officials suspect that the explosive was set up by al-Shabaab terrorists or their remnants operating in the area.

The targeted premise houses non-locals including teachers, nurses casual labourers and police officers.

Following the incident, businesses in the area including banks announced suspension of operations as security officers commenced investigations into the matter.

Among the banks that announced the closure of their branch in the region is Equity Bank, which further confirmed that all its staff are safe.

“Dear Esteemed Members, We regret to inform you, that our Elwak Branch, Mandera County will remain closed today following an explosion in Elwak Town. We confirm that our branch and the staff in Elwak are safe. However, as the security agencies continue with investigations,” the bank said in a message on social media.

Police who arrived at the scene confirmed there was an explosion but are yet to confirm the number of deaths that resulted from the bomb blast.

Investigations were launched immediately, but at the time of publishing, no arrest was made.
