SGR Fares: Passenger fares for children on the standard gauge railway (SGR) trains from Mombasa to Nairobi are set to increase 50 per cent in a bid to raise more revenue to pay the Chinese operator.
Kenya Railways says it is working on a proposal that will remove the subsidy offered to children between the ages of three and 11 that has been in place since May 2017. The minors currently pay Sh. 1,500 for first class and Sh. 500 for economy class tickets compared to Sh. 3,000 and Sh. 1,000 by adults respectively.
Passengers will be charged Sh. 940 from Mariakani to Nairobi and vice versa. Fares from Miasenyi to Nairobi will cost Sh. 810 while Nairobi to Miasenyi will be at Sh. 900.
It will cost Sh. 700 to travel from Voi to Nairobi, with a similar fare changed for a trip from Nairobi to Voi.
Mtito-Andei to Nairobi and vice versa will cost Sh. 490 while those traveling from Kibwezi to Nairobi will pay Sh. 400.
Those travelling from Emali to Nairobi will pay Sh. 260 whereas passengers boarding at Athi River to Nairobi will be charged Sh. 60.
