The Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) is set to be upgraded to an electric railway line at a cost of Sh. 49 billion.
The contractor, China Roads and Bridge Corporation will be offered 15 per cent of the current construction cost of Sh. 327 billion to carry out the upgrade.
The electrification of the line will be done on the Mombasa-Nairobi route.
According to Transport cabinet secretary James Macharia, the locomotives will first be powered by diesel before the electrification is fully implemented.
