A 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) female has been left stranded after being selected to join a boys’ school.
Gloria Adhiambo, who sat her KCPE exam at Nyalgunga primary school, was called to join Lenana School, a boys’ institution in Nairobi.
“This is the calling letter I got. I didn’t know it was a boys’ school. I only realized that it was not a girls’ school when I did more research in anticipation of joining the school,” Gloria said.
Adhiambo, 14, who scored 389 marks, revealed she had selected Alliance Girls, Kisumu Girls, and Starehe Girls as her preferred secondary schools.
The other schools she selected include Rang’ala, Sinaga, and Sega Girls schools and Ulafu and Kowet Secondary schools.
“People were happy that I was called to a good school but we are now left perplexed. We don’t even know how to approach well-wishers for financial help since I need facilitation to join high school,” she added

The girl is, however, uncertain whether she will join form one even if the mistake is corrected due to financial struggles.
“I would like to join Kisumu Girls High School but I am afraid because my parents may not take me there due to lack of school fees,” she said.
Her mother, Margaret Alowe, who works as a casual labourer, said they applied for various scholarships, including Wings to Fly, KCB, and Elimu scholarships, but were unsuccessful.
She is now calling on the Education Ministry to correct the mistake and well-wishers to support her actualize her dream of becoming a lecturer.
“I worked so hard hoping that one day I will transform this village of Nyalgunga when I finally become a lecturer who teaches sciences at the University,” she said.
