Sudanese hackers claim they’ve brought eCitizen down; target Kenyan companies

Sudanese hackers claim they've brought eCitizen down; target Kenyan companies

Over the last few days, Kenyans seeking government services through the popular eCitizen government platform have been unable to do so.

The system has been down. Now claims have emerged from a group of hackers out of Sudan who are alleging that they are responsible for the downtime being experienced by eCitizen.

The claims have gone viral on social media platforms. They follow the ongoing cold war between Sudan and Kenya that has allegedly seen a Sudanese army general dare Kenya’s President William Ruto to send the Kenya Defense Forces to Sudan.

In addition, services from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) have been largely unavailable over the last few days, with Kenyans unable to access services such as renewal of driving licenses.

So far, there has been no word out of the Ministry of Information and Technology on the matter, with the hacking claims only being confirmed through anonymous sources.

The revamped eCitizen was relaunched by President William Ruto on Friday, June 30, 2023.

The platform currently hosts over 5,000 services.  The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is among those that have migrated their operations to the online platform, with four institutions now set to deliver their services digitally.
