Elections change term two school closing dates. See new dates

Co-Op post

The upcoming General Elections have forced the Ministry of Education to review mid term and term two school closing dates. The General Election will be held on Tuesday August 9. This will be about three weeks after schools reopened for second term.

Due to the elections, the Ministry of Education has now set the closing dates.

Both primary and secondary schools had closed on 2nd July 2022 for a short first-term holiday that lasted until 10th July 2022.

The second term started on 11th July 2022. It was initially scheduled to have a half term on 11th August 2022.  This half term was to last for three days and conclude on 14th August 2022. The full term was supposed to end on 16th September 2022.

Now, there will be a mid-term break that will correspond with General Elections in August. The midterm break will come earlier than had been expected by one week. It will start on August 6 and last until August 14.

If there is a run off in the General Elections, the Ministry of Education could be forced to do another review. In Kenya, primary schools double up as polling stations during the general elections.

In January, schools in Kenya will resume with their normal annual calendar. The first term of 2023 will begin on January 23, 2023, and end on April 21, 2023.

It will have a total of 13 weeks. Term 2 will be a 13-week term that will begin on May 8 and end on August 11 of 2023. In between, schools will have midterm breaks.
