OceanGates Expeditions, which owns the Titanic Submersible, now believes all five passengers aboard the missing submersible are dead.
The five were on an expedition to explore the wreckage of the Titanic. Titanic, which sunk in 1912 and killed over 1,500 passengers, lies 3.8 kilometers below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean.
“We now believe that our CEO Stockton Rush, Shahzada Dawood, and his son Suleman Dawood, Hamish Harding, and Paul-Henri Nargeolet have sadly been lost. These men were true explorers who shared a distinct spirit of adventure and a deep passion for exploring and protecting the world’s oceans.” OceanGate stated.
The ill-fated journey was OceanGate Expeditions’ third annual voyage, a sought-after but extremely expensive trip.
The vessel began the two-and-a-half-hour descent to the famous wreckage early Sunday when it suddenly lost contact with its mother ship, the Polar Prince, just an hour and 45 minutes into the journey.
The U.S. Coast Guard said that debris from the craft was found on the ocean floor on Thursday, about 1,600 feet from the bow of the Titanic
