Kenya Railways announces training opportunities for train drivers, mechanics; How to apply

Kenya Railways has announced various training opportunities for railway professionals at the Railway Training Institute.

In a notice on Wednesday, April 9, Kenya Railways invited students to apply for admission, noting that the application window will close on April 15, 2025.

The institution has open opportunities in five sectors, including Locomotive Driving, Rolling Stock Inspection, Locomotive Maintenance, Machinist, and Passenger Operation.

“The Railway Training Institute is now admitting students for specialised training in Locomotive Driving, Rolling Stock Inspection, Locomotive Maintenance, and more. Get hands-on skills designed for SGR operations & maintenance,” Kenya Railways stated.

Learners interested in pursuing the locomotive driving course will pay a training fee of Sh212,000, while those in Rolling Stock Inspection, Locomotive Maintenance, Machinist, and Passenger Operation will part ways with Sh112,000 for the entire training period.

The training period for Locomotive Driving is 12 months, while Rolling Stock Inspection, Locomotive Maintenance, Machinist, and Passenger Operation training is 9 months.

Requirements

The requirements for the Locomotive Driving Course include a Diploma in either Mechanical Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or other related professions from a recognised institution.

On the rolling stock inspection course, one will be required to have a Craft Certificate in either Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, or a related profession from a recognised institution.

Meanwhile, requirements for Locomotive Maintenance course include a Diploma in either Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or any other related profession from a recognised institution.

On the other hand, the Machinist Course has a minimum requirement that includes a Craft Certificate in Mechanical Engineering or any other related profession from a recognised institution.

For the passenger operation course, the minimum requirements include a Craft Certificate in either Transport Management, Logistics, Business Management, Tour Guiding, or Nursing from a recognized institution.

Experience in the transportation industry is an added advantage.

How to apply

Interested candidates are urged to apply on https://rti.ac.ke and provide copies of a certificate of good conduct, academic certificates, a national ID, birth certificate, a non-refundable application fee of  Sh1,000, and fill a National Standard Railway Training Institute (NSRTI) form.

The documents should be sent to the Director, Railway Training Institute, via email or post office, by April 14, 2025.

Applicants must also provide their email address and phone number for efficient communication of application status and interview dates.
