Police officers on Tuesday morning shot a UDA supporter in Eldoret town in unclear circumstances.
Kapsaret former MP Oscar Sudi reacted to the shooting, confirming that the officers placed a government bullet in his body and left him with a head injury. The man has been rushed to the hospital to receive treatment.
According to Sudi, the man was shot for following a vehicle carrying election materials on ballot day. He was allegedly in a gang.
Those who were behind the operation moved to hide in a house after realizing their plan had been busted. The man is allegedly said to have been carrying marked ballot papers.
“Wakafuatwa na hao vijana wenye wana support koti moja wakakuja mpaka corner fulani hapa. Wakati walijua wamejulikana wakajaribu kuingia sijui nyumba gani pale lakini wamekabiliana na hawa vijana wakitaka kujua hii ballots mnabeba imemarkiwa nani,” said MP Oscar Sudi.
English translation, ”They were followed by those men supporting UDAs gubernatorial hopeful, Koti Moja, up to a certain corner. When they realized that they had been discovered, they tried breaking into one of the nearby houses but the police officers dealt with them, looking to find out who the marked ballots belonged to.”
“Walikuwa wanafanya in a peaceful way. Lakini kwa sababu waliona vijana wamezidi kuitana wamekuwa wengi hawa polisi wametoka hapo na hasira wakagonga gari ya mmoja ya hawa vijana. Wakapiga risasi kijana mmoja kichwa na hiyo risasi nikijaribu kuangalia kwa sababu pia mimi niko na bunduki. Hii risasi nadhani ni ya serikali,” added MP Oscar Sudi.
“They did it in a peaceful way (The officers). However, because the men called for backup and became many, the police got angry and shot at one of their vehicles. They shot one of the men in the head, I looked at the bullet since I also have the same gun. I think it belongs to the government.”
This is just one of the unfolding dramas that come with election days. On the eve of elections day, gunshots were fired between unknown assailants and police officers at the CDF Office in Eldas tallying center in Wajir.
