My mom called pastor to pray for graduate job, now I manage poultry farm

Co-Op post

In today’s world, it’s uncommon for university graduates to return to the villages and settle there.

Benson Mwene Odina completed his Bachelor’s degree in Information Sciences and Knowledge Management education at the University of Kabianga well aware of the expectations resting on his shoulders

He was to head back to the city and begin the job hunt popularly known as ‘tarmacking’. Little did he know, that on his graduation day, he would have a light bulb moment for starting an enterprise; poultry farming.

In an exclusive, Benson shared his inspiring journey of transitioning from a job seeker to a young entrepreneur. The writer and researcher observed that his aspirations included challenging the narrative which favours white-collar jobs.

His story motivates other young people to find opportunities even when things seem tough. He remembered a moment after his graduation when his finance lecturer shared invaluable words of wisdom.

“The lecturer told us that the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams,” he said.

Arriving at his hometown for his graduation ceremony, Benson spotted a large flock of chickens being transported. He began to curiously question about the unmet demand for poultry in the area.

“Why rely on poultry from neighbouring counties when he could meet the demand locally?” he quipped in his mind.

Armed with just Sh. 15,000 gifted to him during his graduation party, Benson started devising a plan to turn his poultry farming vision into reality. His dream is to compete with the world’s wealthiest farmers one day.

He quickly constructed a basic poultry structure and purchased a small stock of chickens. However, his decision wasn’t well received by his community.

They expected someone of his educational calibre to seek employment in the city, not start doing rural entrepreneurship. Benson recalled one morning when his mother invited a pastor from the local church to their home for prayers.

“I have asked our pastor to pray for you so that you can get a job. It is high time you put your education to use and find employment,” he reflected on his mother’s words.

Nonetheless, the young man remained staunch to his belief that education should serve as a tool for solving problems and empowering the community to apply their knowledge practically.

Benson has done well in poultry farming. He sells his products in local markets and now looks to grow his farm. He opines that rural areas are good places for entrepreneurs to solve problems and create sustainable solutions.

“I started where I was with what I had. I may not be where I want to be yet, but with character and grit, I am on my way to owning and managing a poultry factory farm.”
