21-year-old arrested for killing employer over low pay

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Tuesday arrested Victor Ambeyi, a 21-year-old accused of killing his employer in Njathaini, Kasarani, Nairobi.

Ambeyi, who was a casual labourer at a homestead in Kasarani is said to have murdered his employer Catherine Waceke Kimotho over low pay before dumping her body in a septic tank.

DCI said after committing the heinous act, the suspect went for a hideout in Kinoo, Kiambu county, where he was smoked alongside his 22-year-old cousin who had been sheltering him.

“Acting on intelligence, DCI officers from Nairobi regional headquarters proceeded to Kinoo, where the suspect was being harbored by his cousin, Collins Seda Wanjau, 22. The two were arrested.

”After interrogating the suspects, detectives furthered the investigation to Githurai 44, where they recovered the mobile phone of the deceased at a phone repair shop belonging to 22-year-old Benjamin Kimani Mwaura. He was also taken into custody,” DCI stated.

The suspects were detained at Kasarani Police Station in Nairobi as police continued their investigations before being arraigned in court today to face murder charges.

Reports indicate that Ambeyi had worked for Waceke for only one month. The suspect claimed that they had a disagreement with his employer after he was allegedly paid less than what they had agreed.

This comes at a time when the country is experiencing a sharp rise in cases of murder and manslaughter primarily on women.

According to Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat, over 97 women were murdered in the three months ending October 30, with the cases pending in courts.

“About 90 percent of femicide cases have been thoroughly investigated, resulting in the arrest of suspects, with these cases now pending in courts,” he said.

He called for collaboration to enhance women safety and ensure comprehensive investigation and prosecution of all cases.

“We urge every member of society, including governmental, civil, and religious leaders, to engage in this crucial dialogue,” he said. “Collective action can help us to eradicate the scourge of femicide and safeguard the lives of our citizens,” he added.
