M-Pesa owner rewards Githurai man with Sh. 1,500 after he returned Sh. 130,000 lost float

Boniface Kinyanjui has made the headlines with his integrity and kindness after returning Sh. 130,000 to an M-Pesa woman.

The young man has received widespread praise for his honesty, with many lauding him as an exemplary member of society.

Derrick Mbugua, who shared Kinyanjui’s story on Facebook, revealed that the young man makes a living by collecting waste around shops in Githurai and Kahawa Wendani.

Kinyanjui walks with a ‘gunia’, collecting recyclable waste, which is weighed at the end of the day and earns him his daily salary.

On this particular day, the M-Pesa lady saw him carrying his recyclable trash and she asked him to help clear her empty boxes that she wasn’t using. The young man, much obliged, took the boxes and put them in his ‘gunia’ and went about his business as usual.

The businesswoman realized that one of the boxes contained her M-Pesa float for the day, which was valued at Sh. 130,000. In shock and panic, the lady began to look for Kinyanjui.

“She called one of the businesswomen just opposite her shop after explaining to her what had happened, they agreed to take two different routes to see if they will, by any chance, see Kinyanjui.”

After scouring the area and failing to see him, the two M-Pesa ladies decided to follow a man carrying his ‘gunia’, hoping he’d lead them to Kinyanjui. They eventually arrived at a weighing and recycling plant.

Luck had smiled upon them as they were fortunate enough to find Kinyanjui after a frantic search of the area.

“Just as they gave up, a young man who was bending just next to them removing things from his ‘gunia’ stands up and they notice he is brown.” Mbugua wrote on Facebook.

Upon being approached by the M-Pesa lady, Kinyanjui calmly informed her that it was he who had collected the boxes. He had found the money and had not spent a single shilling.

“They walked with him back to the M-Pesa shop and he returned the Sh. 130,000. The owner of the shop gifted him Sh. 1,500 from the cash.”

Kenyans took to social media to praise Kinyanjui for his integrity and honesty. Others criticized him for not taking the opportunity to get himself out of the dire situation he was in.

But everyone was in harmony, agreeing that the amount the M-Pesa lady had granted Kinyanjui after he returned the money was insufficient.
