Wangari Kuria: Farmer Wins Global Award for Providing Information to Farmers in Kenya

Farmer on Fire Chief Executive Officer Wangari Kuria was among the three Africans recognized in the New York Global Citizen Prize Award 2023.

Wangari was recognized for profoundly impacting local communities by providing information to farmers across Africa in the fight against food insecurity.

“This year, the award for trailblazing activist in systemic barriers and food security goes to Wangari Kuria, known as the Farmer on Fire. Wangari Kuria is a young farmer using her platform to educate and inspire people to fight for food security,” Global Citizen stated.

Wangari’s Nairobi-based organization works with vulnerable single mothers from pastoralist communities who are affected by severe climate change.

She incubates them in her model farms, where she commercially produces mushrooms, BSFLarvae, and Azolla. She also trains women to empower them to launch their own mushroom-farming businesses.

Farmer on Fire also links established agribusinesses like AGRA, John Deere, Heifer International, and the Ministry of Agriculture to over 50,000 Smallholder farmers that follow the brand through digital channels.

“As we continue to fight for a world where everyone has access to enough nutritious food, it is encouraging to know that selfless heroes like Wangari are at the forefront of change,” Global Citizen stated.

Kuria was also one of the winners of the Forbes Forty Under 40 Africa Awards held in South Africa for her contribution to the agriculture sector.
