Consumer anger forces DSTV to open sports channel on Compact

DStv Channels

Dstv has reversed its earlier decision to move a sports channel to its Premium bouquet from the lower Compact Plus bouquet after subscriber outrage.

In August this year, MultiChoice Kenya drew the wrath of its subscribers when they exempted English Premier League Matches on Compact Plus followed by a 15 per cent increase in monthly rates.

With the new offer, active Compact Plus subscribers will get the EPL experience on SuperSport 3 while SuperSport 5 will be made available to provide coverage of the La Liga.

The company has linked the move to the tough economic times being experienced in the country as at now.

“This move will also ensure all the subscribers have a fantastic holiday season with a wide range of added entertainment for the whole family which includes the various holiday pop-up channels including the Nigerian Festivals, Hoolee, alongside new channels like M-Net Family, Vuzu and Emmanuel TV,” said Mr Walingo Chiruyi, General Manager, MultiChoice Kenya.

As the pioneer of digital television in Kenya, Dstv has over the years faced competition from both local and international companies providing similar services.

The new entrants have therefore increased digital inclusion over time posing competition to the South African service provider.

According to a report on the company’s economic impact that was released by Deloitte in October, the company pumped about Sh16 billion to Kenya’s GDP in 2014 alone.

The same year saw Dstv get edged by StarTimes which acquired 39 per cent against Multichoice’s overall market share that stood at 38 per cent.
