Education Ministry Bans The Following Exams In All Schools

Education Ministry Bans The Following Exams In All Schools

The Ministry of Education has reiterated the ban on Mock and joint examinations in all schools as it steps to create favorable learning conditions for students.

In a letter to County Directors of Education, Basic Education PS Belio Kipsang said the move is aimed at addressing the rising cases of school unrest occasioned by adverse learning environment.

He directed all schools to desist from holding any inter-school examinations, saying it would interfere with the school calendar.

The PS further directed all County and Sub-County Directors of Education to ensure all schools within their jurisdiction adhered to the new directive.

“The purpose of this circular is to ask you to bring this to the attention of all schools within your jurisdiction and take corrective measures to stop any occurrence,” said Kipsang in a letter dated July 6, 2023.

According to Kipsang, the decision was agreed upon after a meeting with the Parliamentary Committee on Education and the Special Investigation Team.

The two teams, led by  David Koech and Claire Omollo, observed that mock exams were among the main causes of strikes, particularly in boarding schools.

The Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (Kessha) earlier expressed its support for the ban on mock exams. The association, however, challenged the Education Ministry to do more in mainstreaming the education sector in a bid to restore sanity in schools instead of pegging the unrest on mock examinations alone.
