Government bans WorldCoin in Kenya

Government bans WorldCoin in Kenya

The government has banned activities involving the cryptocurrency project dubbed WorldCoin.

The ban comes a day after thousands of Kenyans, suspected to be jobless, lined up at the KICC to have their eyeballs scanned.

The government says that the ban will allow an evaluation of possible risks to the public.

When announcing the suspension, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki said that the ban will remain in effect until relevant security, financial services and data protection agencies establish the authenticity and legality of their activities.

“Relevant security, financial services and data protection agencies have commenced inquiries and investigations to establish the authenticity and legality of the aforesaid activities, the safety and protection of the data being harvested, and how the harvesters intend to use the data,” CS Kindiki said in a statement.

“Further, it will be critical that assurances of public safety and the integrity of the financial transactions involving such a large number of citizens be satisfactorily provided upfront.”
