Students to pay over Sh100K for a degree program at Open University of Kenya

Students intending to pursue degree programs at the Open University of Kenya (OUK) will part ways with over Sh100,000 per year.

According to the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (Kuccps),  it will cost Sh105,000 to study an undergraduate degree course at OUK, except for Bachelor of Technology Education, which will cost Sh115,000 per year for full-time study.

Meanwhile, the cost of pursuing a postgraduate diploma program is Sh110,000 for one academic year.

“The annual cost of studying a degree program has taken into account a 15% discount that the government negotiated with universities under the new higher education funding model,” KUCCPS stated.

Learners will have the flexibility to pay and pursue individual course units at a cost of Sh10,000 per unit, while students outside East Africa will pay 10 percent more for all the programs or course units.

KUCCPS opened the portal for admission at OUK on Monday, August 28, allowing learners to apply for degree programs and postgraduate diploma courses at the country’s first fully virtual university.

The institution will begin with five pioneer degree programs, namely a Bachelor of Data Science; a Bachelor of Science in Cyber Security and Digital Forensics; a Bachelor of Technology Education; a Bachelor of Business and Entrepreneurship; and a Bachelor of Economics and Statistics.

The postgraduate programs meanwhile include a Postgraduate Diploma in Leadership and Accountability and a Postgraduate Diploma in Learning Design and Technology.

“The degree and postgraduate diploma programmes have between 12 and 14 course units per academic year. Learning will take one year for postgraduate programs while the bachelor’s degree programs will take four years to complete,” KUCCPS said.

The college placement body, however, noted that a student may decide to take a course unit at a time on the alternative flexible mode and may plan to take longer periods.

KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer Dr. Agnes Mercy Wahome said the applications admissible at the KUCCPS portal will be free of charge and without any deadline.
