Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has blamed former president Uhuru Kenyatta for the leaky roofs at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
The blames comes a day after the roofs were caught on camera leaking rain water and flooding the check in area and the floors.
He claimed that former President Uhuru had neglected the aviation sector and that buildings in this sector were in dilapidated state.
“When we got into the office we found that the projects in the previous regime were substandard.
“When the renovation was done on Terminal 1C and E, it was in a hurry and temporary because there needed to be set up an in-field project which was costly. But we have spoken to the contractors to redo the job,” CS Murkomen said.
“We can’t continue to use this airport as it is. That is why we have a feasibility study ready and the president has said a new terminal will be delivered in less than three years with private contractors.”

He said that smaller pipes within the airport that carry water were leaking but repairs were already underway.
On Monday afternoon, video clips were shared from the airport showing the leaking JKIA roofs at some of the airport’s terminals as water torrents came through, leaving certain sections flooded.
A video that was shared by financial platform Mwango Capital shows a section of the airport flooded and the check-in area getting battered by rain water that was leaking through the roof.
“At 1630hrs today, 13th November, 2023, one of our team members experienced these unusual conditions at the JKIA. Perhaps the management at KAA views this as normal and acceptable. We thought it best to bring it to the public’s attention for action. We should be better than this,” said Mwango.
