Hundreds of employees at State Corporations fired over fake academic papers

A recent report disclosed that state-owned organizations such as KMTC, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), and Kenya Railways let go of 202 out of 650 staff.

The report also alleges that the majority of civil servants got jobs and promotions courtesy of forged academic and professional papers.

Top institutions led the list, and the employees were dismissed for using fake academic documents to secure their jobs.

Public Service Commission noted that 58 staff chose to resign voluntarily after it was found that they had forged their academic papers.

At Kenya Railways, 55 employees were dismissed, including 2 who claimed to have degrees. KMTC let go of 35 staff members, and KeMSA terminated the employment of 16 staff.

The Geothermal Development Company dismissed 15 employees for faking academic documents, while the National Construction Authority and KEPHIS kicked out 3 members each.

Kenya Pipeline decided to part ways with 58 public servants who resigned voluntarily due to forged documents. Meanwhile, at LAPFUND, 3 alleged degree holders and 3 with diplomas chose to resign.

At NEMA, 1 diploma and 5 KCSE certificate holders left their work stations amounting to 6 people, while at REREC, 1 person with a master’s degree, 1 degree, 2 diplomas and 1 KCSE certificate chose to resign, bringing the tally to 5.

“Most of the forged certificates reported were from State Corporations and Semi-Autonomous Government Agencies at 76.3% and ministries and State Departments at 17.9%,” read Mr Rotich while providing the report to Parliament.

PSC directed all state corporations to fire any civil servant who will be found to have forged their academic qualifications to get employment or promotion. It urged them to be thorough in conducting due diligence to ensure papers are authentic.

Currently, Kenya Railways and MTRH are processing 27 cases of forged documents that are at different disciplinary stages. KRA and Postal Corporation of Kenya are investigating 9 cases of forged papers used to secure employment.
