Mary Wachira is the manager of Million Hairs Barbershop in Nairobi’s Utawala estate. The barbershop is not only popular for its elegance but also for the quality service it provides.
According to her, her boss settled on the barbershop business after the two brainstormed on the potential of barbershop versus boutique business.
“My boss wanted to set up a business but they did not know what to choose between a boutique and a barbershop. My boss was motivated to start something unique and classy after seeing people being mishandled in other barbershops,” narrated Wachira.
The two would later put up a barbershop and christened it Million Hairs. True to its name, the business peaked quickly and after two months it had consistent clients flocking in.
Million Hairs offers various services including manicure and pedicure. For a full shave, male customers part ways with Sh400 while women pay Sh100.
Manicure services cost Sh600, pedicures Sh800, and different types of massages range from Sh1,000 to Sh5,000 among others.

Wachira notes that most of the clients consider their charges cheap given the quality services offered as well as the high investment in interior design.
Among the customers who frequent the establishment are both middle-class and high-end customers including top politicians, and other public personalities.
According to her, the business manages to save Sh400k every month and has employed about 11 employees.
Just like any other business, she notes that the barbershop business has a fair share of its challenges among them costly products and incompetent workers.
“You employ one person today, after a while, they disappear. Truth be told Rwandese are professional in shaving, specifically the barbers, they are very good at their work. I am a Kenyan and I am embarrassed because of that,” said Wachira.
She advised Kenyans not to despise the Kinyozi business as it is very profitable.
“Kenyans are lazy and they do not consider barbershop as a business. They despise it a lot yet it is a well-paying business,” she added.
