Doline Nyambati: Kenyan businesswoman selling chapatis for Sh8,000 in the US

Doline Nyambati, a Kenyan businesswoman, is one of the entrepreneurs making it big in the food business in the US.

She narrated how she moved to the US seeking certification as a Certified Nurse Assistant. However the job did not last long forcing her to divert to entrepreneurship.

According to Nyambati, her love for Kenyan dishes prompted her to venture into the food industry, which she has now registered after acquiring a certification.

“My love for Kenyan cuisine and passion for food was my first inspiration to start a food business here, in the USA you can rarely find ”good food” and people are too busy to even cook hence running such a business is a good opportunity for growth even as we bring the Kenyan name along to growth, explained Doline.

She sells various Kenyan dishes including chapati, mahamri, “ngumu” and samosas. She notes that chapatis and samosas are the fastest selling dishes with 20 chapatis retailing at Ksh 8100 ($60) and 20 samosas at Ksh 6750 ($50).

Just like any other business, Nyambati says the food business in the US has its fair share of challenges, among them pricey flavors. This forces her to ship products from Kenya.

“I shop for Kenyan flavors from stores that sell them and, at times, ship from home. It is a challenge to get authentic Kenyan flavours and even when you do they are very pricey”, she said.
