Magistrate Monica Kivuti who was shot inside Makadara court by OCS dies

Magistrate Monica Kivuti who was shot by a senior police officer has died. Kivuti died at the Nairobi Hospital where she had been undergoing treatment.

Her death was announced by Chief Justice Martha Koome.

“I wish to confirm to the Nation that Hon. Monica Kivuti, Principal Magistrate, Makadara Law Courts has lost the fight against the extensive injuries sustained during an open gun attack in Court,” said Chief Justice Koome.

Kivuti was shot inside court number 9 on June 13 after she made a ruling in a fraud case involving Sh. 2.9 million.

“During an open court session earlier today, the Magistrate cancelled the bond for an accused person who had jumped bond and had failed to offer satisfactory explanations for jumping bond,” a statement from the Chief Registrar of Judiciary Winfridah B. Mokaya said.

Immediately this decision was given, the police officer who was identified as Chief Inspector Samson Kipchirchir Kipruto, the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Londiani Police Station in Bomet County, drew his gun at the judge.

He shot the judge on the hip and chest. Police officers in the court responded and shot him dead. His body was moved to the City Mortuary. Three other police officers are reported to have also been injured in the shooting.

The officer was the husband of the accused woman, Jennifer Wairimu, who the judge ruled against.

Wairimu who is 48-years-old is an accused person who is facing charges of obtaining up to Sh. 2.9 million by false pretense.
