Schools close earlier as Education Ministry changes half term dates

Schools close earlier as Education Ministry changes half term dates

The Ministry of Education has announced an early closure of schools for the second term’s half-term break following political unrest in the country.

In a memo to school principals, the Ministry of Education said that the half-term break will begin on Monday, June 24. Previously, learners were set to break for mid-term on Wednesday, June 26.

According to the Ministry, the early closure is aimed at giving students and parents ample time to make travel plans ahead of the planned Finance Bill protests planned for Tuesday.

Following the changes, students in day schools will be allowed to start their half-term break after the close of the academic day today.

This year’s school calendar has been marked by multiple changes, which have seen learners break from or resume classes earlier or later than usual.

Among the major issues that have caused the changes are the recently witnessed floods in the country, which delayed the re-opening of the institutions for the second term and delayed capitation.

According to the 2024 school calendar, Term two runs from April 29 to August 2, a period of 14 weeks.

The August holiday is set to begin on August 5 and end on August 23. Learners will then resume for the third term on August 26, 2024, until October 25, 2024. The long holiday is set to begin on October 28, 2024, until January 3, 2025.

The KCSE examination, on the other hand, will run for three weeks, from November 4 to November 22.
