Bishop Allan Kiuna, founder and preacher of Jubilee Christian Church (JCC), has passed away after a long battle with cancer.

Bishop Kiuna had been battling Multiple Myeloma Cancer and was receiving treatment in the US. His fight against the illness began in December 2022 when he travelled abroad for medical care.

After a year abroad for treatment, Bishop Kiuna returned to Kenya and shared good news at his Thanksgiving ceremony on December 10th. He announced to the congregation with much gratitude that he had overcome his battle against cancer.

He revealed that his cancer treatment had cost over $3 million, approximately Sh. 459,900,000 at the time. He emphasized that the funds were divinely provided, and he did not have to pay out of his own pocket.

“For the one year that I was in the US, my treatment cost $3 million, and I didn’t remove one coin from my pocket because the God of heaven provided. I did not call anyone,” he said.

“Don’t get bitter with the process. If you get bitter with the process, you shall abort your purpose. I am not bitter about the process because I am better. My best days are ahead of me.”

Despite the challenging medical journey, the illness seemingly recurred before Kiuna succumbed at a hospital in Nairobi. He was rushed to the hospital on Tuesday, July 9th, when his condition deteriorated.

He leaves behind his wife, Rev Kathy Kiuna and three children, Vanessa, Jeremy and Stephanie.

Multiple Myeloma

Multiple Myeloma is a cancer of the plasma cells, a type of white blood cell found in the bone marrow. These cells are part of the immune system and help fight infections by producing antibodies.

When someone has Multiple Myeloma, the plasma cells become cancerous and crowd out healthy blood cells. These cancerous cells also produce abnormal proteins called M proteins, which can damage bones, kidneys, and other organs.

Unfortunately, Multiple Myeloma often shows no early symptoms. As the disease progresses, common symptoms to watch for include:

• Bone pain, especially in the back and ribs
• Fatigue
• Frequent infections
• Loss of appetite
• Weight loss
• Nausea
• Constipation
• Weakness
• Confusion
• Tingling or numbness in hands and feet

The exact cause of Multiple Myeloma remains unknown. Diagnosing it requires multiple tests, as no single test can confirm the disease.

Doctors use a variety of tests to diagnose Multiple Myeloma, including urine and blood tests, bone marrow biopsies, and imaging tests like CT scans, X-rays, and MRIs.

Although there is no known cure for multiple myeloma, various treatments can help manage the disease and alleviate symptoms. These include chemotherapy, stem cell transplantation, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy.

Recovery prospects for multiple myeloma patients vary based on factors like cancer stage at diagnosis, age, and overall health.

Practically, the 5-year survival rate for people with multiple myeloma is around 50%. However, there is hope as many people have lived with the illness for many years without requiring treatment.
