High school fees arrears block needy student from joining UoN 2yrs after his KCSE

A needy student from Kenyolok in Kilgoris Constituency has been unable to join the University of Nairobi, two years since he sat for his KCSE exams and scored an impressive grade of B Plain.

Ambrose Kiplangat Korir was admitted at the University of Nairobi for a Bachelor of Science in Education degree course. However, lack of fees has chained him away from his studies, with no sign of help in sight.

Korir says that after sitting for the exams, he could not collect his certificates at his former secondary school because he owed Sh. 52,000 in fees arrears.

“I was admitted to study Bachelor of Science in Education at the UoN but I was forced to forfeit as I did not manage to collect my Leaving Certificate and other school documents from Maseno School over fees arrears,” he says.

Korir is the sixth born in a family of 10. He says that part of the money he owes Maseno School is ‘Development Money’ which was introduced when he was in form four.

To make ends meet, Korir had been teaching at nearby schools under the Board of Management. He taught for two terms. However, the payments for these type of gigs are usually so small that they can not be lived on and still make a dent on the debt Korir owes Maseno.
