The government has disbursed Sh1.56 billion to university students and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) trainees for tuition and upkeep through the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).
In a statement on Tuesday, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba said the funds were released on Friday, March 14.
The allocation brings the total amount allocated in the 2024/2025 financial year to Sh32.7 billion and is set to benefit 31,263 TVET trainees and 33,863 university students.
“The latest disbursement means that in the current Financial Year 2024-25, Helb has disbursed a total of Sh32.7 billion in upkeep and tuition loans to 195,522 trainees in TVET institutions and 390,612 students in universities,” Ogamba said.
The CS said the government will continue to provide financial support to university students and TVET trainees towards the attainment of their academic and training goals.

“The provision of this funding will ensure that student and trainee needs are met, enabling them to focus on their studies without financial strain,” he said.
Learners in universities and TVET institutions are entitled to tuition and upkeep loans based on the old funding model.
This is after a High Court ruling on December 20th, which declared the new university funding model illegal and unconstitutional.
In the old funding model, students receive funding based on enrollments and the programmes they are undertaking.
The government provides 80 per of the cost while universities raise the remaining 20 percent from student fees, research, and other income-generating activities.
