Kenya’s super rich are addicted to crystal meth drug, US says

Crystal meth, also know as ice, and whose real name is methamphetamine is the illegal drug that Kenya’s super rich are most addicted to. This is according to the United States Department of State (DOS).

The Department of State says that records by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) show that Kenya’s super rich have an increased consumption of adulterated versions of crystal meth. They take this drug alongside other addictive prescription drugs, the DOS says.

The department further says that this drug is hard to capture in Kenya because the rich, who are the main users, have access to private healthcare facilities where they get attended in event of overdoses or when in need of rehabilitation, without being reported to the authorities.

“Drugs entering Kenya are often consumed by the affluent who get treatment through private care, eluding detection by authorities, which makes prevalence difficult to ascertain,” the DOS states.

Among the general population, the DOS states that the most commonly used controlled substances in the country are cannabis (weed) and prescription drugs.

“Diazepam is the most used prescription drug. It is followed by artane, rohypnol, amitriptyline, largactil, codein syrup, tramadol, piriton, biperiden, haloperidol, propofol (anaesthetic), and olanzapine,” the DOS said. Olanzapine is an anti-psychotic drug.

Further, according to the Department of Justice, meth – or methamphetamine – is a powerful, highly addictive stimulant drug that dramatically affects the central nervous system.  It is usually illegally produced and distributed. “Meth comes in several forms, including powder, crystal, rocks, and tablets.   When it comes in the crystal form it is called “crystal meth.” It can be taken by swallowing, snorting, smoking, or injecting it with a hypodermic needle,” the DOJ states.

Although meth was previously designed for the treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), it is rarely used for this purpose and instead is used as an illegal and addictive recreational drug.
