Equity Group Managing Director and CEO Dr. James Mwangi has been conferred the Freedom of the City of London, one of the world’s oldest and most respected civic honours.
The award celebrates Dr. Mwangi’s decades-long commitment to financial inclusivity, equitable economic development, and empowerment of underserved communities across Africa.
It places Dr. Mwangi among a select group of global figures whose transformative leadership has shaped societies and elevated humanity.
Global changemakers who have previously received the award include Nelson Mandela, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Benjamin Franklin, Winston Churchill, Margaret Thatcher, and Lee Kuan Yew.
The Equity boss received the award at a dinner in his honour in London attended by government officials and business leaders, including Cabinet Secretary for Trade and Investments Lee Kinyanjui, Kenya’s High Commissioner to the UK Ambassador Catherine Wahome, and Lord Jonathan Marland, chairman of the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council.
Commenting on the award during the presentation, Dr. Mwangi said the honour reaffirms that purposeful leadership has the power to transform lives, unlock potential, and restore dignity to communities.
“It is also a global recognition that Africa’s time is now—and our stories, innovations, and people matter on the world stage,” he remarked.
Originally established around 1237, the Freedom of the City of London symbolised the status of a ‘free man’ protected by the City’s charter.
The award is a symbolic and honorary recognition given to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional service to society, often in areas like leadership, community service, innovation, and inclusion.

It is only granted by the City of London, which also holds an extensive archive and library of historical records and was traditionally an essential requirement for all who wished to carry on business and prosper in trade within the Square Mile of the City itself.
As a result, the privileges attached to the Freedom were eagerly sought, while the duties and obligations of freemen were faithfully observed.
Other leaders and business figures who have been conferred this honour include Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Otto von Habsburg, Bill Gates, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, and Sanjiv Chadha.
