Kimoi Moi: Inside largest potato company in Nakuru controlled by Moi’s grandson

Former Baringo Senator Gideon Moi’s son, James Kimoi Moi, has taken steps off the family’s political history to establish a successful farming career.

Despite pursuing Civil Engineering, Kimoi ditched the career to venture into potato farming. He is among the elite children who attended some of the best schools in the world.

A look at his education background shows Kimoi attended the Harrow School in London, United Kingdom, before joining the prestigious university of Exeter where he graduated with a first-class honors in Civil Engineering.

After his studies, he returned to Kenya to pursue his passion in farming, becoming the director of Kongoy Farm – a family company that does large-scale farming in the Rift Valley.

The company, which has its headquarters in Nakuru, imports an average of 200 to 300 tonnes of potato seeds from the Netherlands annually. The seeds are later multiplied on the farm locally and then sold at higher rates.

According to Kimoi, the idea of initiating potato seed production in the country was inspired by the shortage of seeds in the country, which saw farmers re-use potatoes harvested from their farms as seeds.

The reused potatoes led to poor production and quality. In his resolve to improve the marketing strategies and smart farm mechanisms, Kimoi has travelled across various countries – picking up on reliable information to incorporate within the company.

“I went to Argentina to see how I can improve myself back at home and use the information from there to make myself competitive in the Kenyan market. I am very excited about the future of agriculture in Kenya,” Kimoi revealed after attending the 2017 LAC Africa International Business Summit.

Besides farming, Kimoi is a sportsman and enjoys playing Polo alongside his father and brother Kigen Moi. In 2019, he led his team in scooping the Connaught Cup Championships.

He is married to Ivy Chebet Meli. The two tied the knot in March 2025 in an exquisite event attended by top government officials.
