Alfred Nganga Mutua is a renowned Kenyan journalist turned politician, currently serving as the Cabinet Secretary for Labour and Social Protection.
Born in 1970 in Masii town, Machakos county, Mutua attended Dagoretti High School for his O-level before proceeding to Jamhuri High School (A level).
He graduated from Whitworth College in the United States with a BA in journalism and an MSc in communication from Eastern Washington University. He earned his doctorate in communication and media from Australia’s University of Western Sydney.
His journalism career started early while he was still in High School, publishing his first story in daily newspapers at the age of 15.
After completing his secondary education, he started writing for various newspapers, including The Sunday Nation, Standard Newspaper, and the Kenya Times Newspaper.
Mutua’s deep journalism skills saw him establish his first company, Golden Dreams Company, at the age of 19, and began publishing the “Golden Times” magazine.
In 2005, he created Kenya’s first modern action TV series, “Cobra Squad,” which became a regional sensation. Other shows he produced include Beba Beba and “How to Be Rich in Africa.”

Besides journalism, Mutua has held positions as a businessman, professor, public servant, and politician in Kenya, the United States, Australia, and the United Arab Emirates.
He was a lecturer in Daystar University, Kenya, University of Western Sydney, Australia, Macquarie University, Australia, and Zayed University, UAE.
Mutua’s entry into politics followed his appointment as the Kenyan government’s spokesman, a position he held between 2002 and 2012.
In 2013, he vied and won the Machakos County gubernatorial seat, becoming the first Governor of Machakos under Kenya’s new Constitution.
Elected under the Wiper Democratic Movement Party ticket, Mutua formed the Maendeleo Chap Chap (MCC) Party in 2016.
He vied for the same position in 2017 and won, serving as governor until 2022. He was named Kenya’s best-performing governor in 2015, 2019, and 2020.
Mutua declared his candidacy for the 2022 Presidential Elections in September 2020, committing to help Kenyans fight corruption and enhance their wealth.
He, however, changed his tune in 2022, declaring his support for William Ruto.
Family
Mutua married Dr. Josephine Thitu on July 1, 2000 and were blessed with three children. Following the end of their marriage in 2015, Josephine and their three children relocated to Australia.
He then established a romantic relationship with Lilian Ng’ang’a whom they separated in 2021 after seven years.
